Apple Watch

My thought about Apple Watch after testing it for a week.

hardware

• top notch build quality and very well thought out design
• sport version is matched with iPhone 6s metal material and finish
• very comfortable to wear
• square screen is okay but I still prefer rounded

software

• can do too much
• make phone call
• load music from the phone, why would I need that?
• view images, enjoy your images on 1.5" screen, idiots
• unintuitive to use, another hand required AT ALL TIME
• not sure why it needs any app, notifications and reply with speech-to-text reply would be good enough
• poor design menu screen, although looks cool while you cycle it around, but too small to select
• sluggish performance, long wait for app to load. For that amount of time I will just pick my phone
• useful exercise tracker

Using with iPhone

• unbeatable when pair with iPhone, probably the only good smartwatch for your iPhone
• silence the call on your phone also silence the watch
• all notifications will send to the watch instead of a phone (nudge my wrist instead of my pocket, good!)
• drain a fair bit of phone battery
• pretty much useless without a phone
• battery is not bad but I don't like that it require dedicated charger
• better use lightning

Microsoft Surface Pro

I just bought a first-gen Surface Pro yesterday to replace my mom's 5 years old broken Vaio which I torn off its HDD cable after a failed attempt to replace Vaio's quirky wireless card.

Since it's a last year model and at 18900 baht ( ~ 600USD ) with touch cover, an unbelievably cheap, I didn't expect much on it. However, my experience on it was so good that I have to type it down on this blog.



The upside.

First, the Surface Pro is the first Windows machine that both the hardware and software are build to fit each other and it really feel like so. Very close to the feeling of using the Mac. In many ways Windows 8.1 performs better than its Apple's counterpart. And things get even better when I realise that it's a first-party Microsoft product, so I could expect many year of support and software update.



Second, Pen and touch cover, both are really great add-ons. Although I got confuse at first because there are so many ways I can interact with the device. I can use touch screen or type on touch cover or use a pen.  Versatility of input is really very useful. And the back tip of the pen is can use as an eraser, pretty nippy gimmick.

Third, the Full-HD screen is one of the best screen I've seen on tablet. It may not have the highest PPI or the biggest but overall, the color reproduction, viewing angle, brightness, are just 'WOW!'.

Forth, the price. Well, at 19000 baht what would you expect from a computer. At this price, at least in Thailand, you could get a laptop which has around the same specs as the Surface Pro but in a much uglier and heavier form and without the OS (one of the reason why pirate software is so popular here). To get this kind of machine, tablet, pen input, well-designed slim keyboard you have to pay around 40000 baht. This Surface Pro is worth a lot more than 19k. Very satisfied.



Last, premium look and feel. Again, compare to the price, this, magnesium, VaporMg case is not what you would normally get.

The machine is not without downside though. I'll list all thing I think it could definitely be improved.

- Weight, a bit heavy for tablet use. At 920g, I feel uncomfortable after holding it in a hand for 15-20 mins. 2-300g lighter would be a great welcome.

- Heat, worse situation than the weight. The back of it gets warm very quickly. Although it's not impossible to touch or hold it in my palm, it's definitely annoying.

- Performance, storage and battery life. It's not the slow machine but not so fast either. 85GB of storage to use is barely okay and 4 and a half hour of battery life is not good enough for tablet. But, good news! Microsoft already addressed all of those problems with the Surface Pro 2. Nothing more to say.

- Ports and connection, 1 USB and 1 miniDisplayPort might be enough for my mom, but for more professional use - one or two more of USB or ThunderBolt is a must.



Summary: It's good and cheap, you cannot find its full-fledge features in any other laptop or tablet at this price. I want to buy another one just for myself.

เป็น notebook ที่สวยอันดับต้นๆในใจเลยทีเดียว ออกแบบได้ลงตัว ใครๆเห็นก็ต้องเหลียวหันกลับมามองอีกรอบ

เรียกได้ว่าสวยบาดใจ body ใช้ Magnesium Alloy ตามสมัยนิยม ดีไซน์ข้อต่อจอเป็นแบบท่อ ดูกลมกลืนกับตัวเครื่อง

ด้านขวาของท่อเป็นปุ่มเปิด-ปิด ที่จะมีลักษณะพิเศษเล็กน้อยคือ เวลาใช้งานเครื่องก็จะมีไฟสีเขียวเรืองขึ้นมา

แต่ถ้าอยู่ใน sleep
mode ไฟก็จะเป็นสีส้มวูบวาบ สวยงามมาก นอกจากนี้ก็คือ จะกดเปิดเครื่องไม่ได้ถ้าไม่เปิดฝาพับขึ้นมาเสียก่อน

ส่วนด้านซ้ายเป็นรูเสียบสายชาร์ต

การประกอบของเครื่องก็ค่อนข้างเรียบร้อยดี ไม่มีจุดที่ยวบยาบให้สัมผัสได้ เว้นแต่ตรงแบตเตอรี่ที่เหมือนจะหลวมๆเล็กน้อยซึ่งก็ไม่ได้เป็นปัญหามาก

Screen

จอของเครื่องนี้เป็นแบบ LED Blacklit ครับ ซึ่งเป็นเทคโนโลยีให้แสงสว่างกับหน้าจอแบบใหม่ที่สว่างกว่า และประหยัดพลังงานมากกว่าแบบ CCFL เดิมครับ

จอของเครื่องนี้ก็สว่างแบบได้ใจมากๆ แต่ก็เป็นจอกระจก ทำให้มีแสงสะท้อนอยู่บ้าง ซึ่งก็ไม่ได้มากมายเหมือน notebook บางรุ่น

ส่วนความละเอียดของจอก็เป็นขนาดมาตรฐานคือ 1280x800 pixel ข้อพับจอที่เป็นแบบท่อ ก็แข็งแรง ไม่มีอาการหลวม แล้วก็ไม่มีตัวล็อกหน้าจอให้รำคาญตาเวลาใช้

แต่มีจุดที่ต้องระวังเล็กน้อย คือจอบางมาก เวลาจับก็ต้องเบามือนิดนึง มีจุดติอีกเล็กน้อยคือจอมันจะอมเหลืองนิดๆ แต่ก็เหมาะสำหรับดูหนังครับ จะสบายตากว่า แต่ถ้าจะทำงานด้านภาพก็อาจจะไม่ค่อยเหมาะนัก (ตอนแรกก็ไม่รู้เหมือนกัน แต่รุ่นพี่ที่เป็นช่างภาพบอก ถึงเพิ่งสังเกตเห็น)

Speakers & Audio

เครื่องนี้ลำโพงเล็กมากครับ เป็นขีดๆข้างละ 2 ขีดซ้าย-ขวา เหนือคีบอร์ด แต่พลังเสียงนี่เรียกได้กว่าเกินตัวครับ ดังพอใช้ได้เลยทีเดียว ถึงจะดังไม่เท่า หลายๆรุ่นที่มีลำโพงแบบ Surround

ส่วนเรื่องคุณภาพเสียง ก็จัดอยู่ในระดับธรรมดา ไม่ได้เด่นอะไรมาก แต่เปิดสุดก็ไม่แตกเหมือน notebook ถูกๆหลายยี่ห้อ

Keyboard & Touchpad

คีบอร์ดของรุ่นนี้ก็กลายเป็นแบบมาตรฐานของ Sony เป็นที่เรียบร้อย คือคีย์บอร์ดแบบยกตัว ที่หลายๆคนคิดว่าเลียนแบบ Macbook มา

แต่จริงๆแล้วไม่ใช่นะครับ เพราะคีย์บอร์ดแบบนี้มีมานานแล้ว และผู้ผลิตหลายเจ้าก็เอามาใช้ได้หลายปีแล้ว Apple ไม่ใช่ผู้เริ่มต้น

จุดเด่นของคีบอร์ดรุ่นนี้คือกดง่ายมาก และสำหรับคนที่เล็บยาวก็จะไม่ทำให้เล็บลงไปติดในร่องของคีบอร์ดด้วย

ส่วน Touchpad ก็มีขาดใหญ่สะใจ Scroll ได้ทั้งทางแนวตั้ง และแนวนอน ความฝืดก็อาจจะมากไปซักหน่อย

ปุ่มก็มีขนาดใหญ่ กดง่าย ออกจะแข็งเล็กน้อย (รุ่นนี้ไม่มี Finger print reader)

Performance & Benchmarks

เครื่องนี้ใช้ Platform Centrino™2 ของ Intel ครับ ซึ่งประกอบด้วย 3 ส่วนคือ

1. Intel® Core™ 2 Duo (Penryn)

3. Intel® WiFi Link 5100/5300 AGN
   

ประสิทธิภาพโดยรวมถือว่าดีกว่ารุ่นก่อนเยอะทีเดียว ทั้งการ Encode Video เล่นเกม ดูหนัง หรือทำงานหนักๆอื่นๆได้สบายหายห่วง

แถมประหยัดพลังงานดีกว่าเดิมอีกด้วย CPU รุ่นนี้มี L2 Cache ที่ 3MB และ FSB 1066MHz ทำให้สามารถดูหนัง HD 1080p ได้สบายหายห่วง ส่วนหนึ่งเพราะว่ามีการ์ดแสดงผลช่วยประมวลผลภาพด้วย

ส่วนการ์ดแสดงผล ATi Mobility Redeon™ HD 3470 ถือได้ว่าอยู่ในระดับล่างๆ แต่ก็สามารถเพิ่มประสิทธิภาพการแสดงผลได้ดีและทำให้สีของภาพสดขึ้นด้วยเทคโนโลยี Avivo™ ของ ATi การใช้การ์ดแสดงผลของ ATi นั้น ทาง Sony คงต้องการเน้นให้รุ่นนี้ทางด้าน Home Entertainment มากกว่าจะเป็น Gaming Notebook

เรื่องการเล่นเกมนั้นก็สามารถเล่นเกมที่ไม่ใหม่มากได้ (ปรับไม่สุด) เท่าที่ลองกับ Call of Duty 5: World at War ก็สามารถปรับความละเอียด 1280*800 และออปชั่นแบบต่ำสุด ได้ Framerate ที่ประมาณ 30-40 fps ก็ถือว่าพอใช้ได้แล้วครับ หรือถ้าเป็นเกมเมื่อ 3-4 ปีที่แล้ว เช่น Half-Life 2 ก็สามารถปรับเกือบสุดได้เลย

สำหรับแรมที่เพิ่มมาเป็น 4 GB นี่ก็ช่วยได้มากครับ ทำให้ระบบเสถียรมากขึ้น และการ์ดจอก็ดูดแรมไปแชร์มากขึ้นด้วย (ดูดไปตั้ง 1.2GB o_O') ทางที่ดีผมก็แนะนำเลยครับว่าควรจะซื้อแรมเพิ่มอีก 2 GB เพราะถ้าแรมแค่ 2 GB คงทำอะไรๆได้ไม่ถนัดนักใน Vista

คะแนน Windows Experience Index ได้ base score มาที่ 4.7 คะแนน ถือว่าดีมากสำหรับ notebook ในกลุ่ม Ultraportable เลยครับ

โปรแกรม WPrime ค่อนข้างอิงกับปริมาณ Main Memory หรือ RAM ดังนั้นเวลาที่ได้อาจจะเร็วขึ้น (1 วินาทีโดยประมาณ)

ผลทดสอบจาก HD Tune

ความเร็วในการโอนข้อมูลเฉลี่ยที่ประมาณ 45 MB/s และความเร็วในการเข้าถึงข้อมูลที่ 18.0 ms ถือว่าอยู่ในระดับความเร็วปกติ

Features

เครื่องนี้ Feature นิดหน่อยครับ นั่นก็คือปุ่ม Mode มีไว้สำหรับเป็น quick lunch โปรแกรมต่างๆที่เรา set ค่าไว้

โดยมี 3 โหมดหลักๆ คือ Business Mode, Personal Mode และ Entertainment Mode ซึ่งแต่ละโหมดก็จะมี shortcut ให้ 5 โปรแกรม ทั้งหมดก็คือสามารถตั้งโปรแกรมได้ 15 โปรแกรม (3*5)

ซึ่งจะมีปุ่มทั้ง 5 อยู่ถัดจากปุ่ม mode ซึ่งเราสามารถกดปุ่ม Setting เลือก Background, shortcut หรือสามารถเปลี่ยนชื่อ mode เองก็ได้

Shortcut ทั้ง 5 จะแสดงอยู่บน desktop ของเครื่องเรา ซึ่งเรามารถที่จะกดจากหน้าจอ หรือจากปุ่มก็ได้ ผมว่าก็เป็น Feature เจ๋งๆที่สะดวกดีครับ

ส่วนอีก 1 Feature ที่ไม่ค่อยมีกันคือ HDD Protection ครับ คือการป้องกัน HDD เสียหายจากการกระแทก ด้วย sensor จับความเคลื่อนไหวนั่นเอง

สามารถเลือกระดับการป้องกันได้ 3 ระดับ Low, Mid, High

Battery

ถ้าใช้พิมพ์งานและเล่นอินเตอร์เน็ตใน Balance mode ความสว่างจอ 50% จะใช้ได้ราวๆ 2ชม.50นาที ออกจะน้อยไปซักหน่อย ถ้าใช้งานหนักหน่อยพวกดู DVD ปรับความสว่างสูงสุด (เปิด Wi-fi) ใน Performance Mode ก็จะใช้ได้ 2ชม.22นาที ก็ดูหนังได้จบเรื่องนึงพอดี มีเวลาเซฟงานอีกนิดหน่อย แต่ถ้าใช้เล่นเกมหรือทำงานแบบหนักๆนี่คงไม่ถึง 2 ชม.แน่นอนครับ (ยังไม่เคยลอง) ส่วนเวลาชาร์ตนี่ก็นานมากๆครับ คือราว 4ชม.กว่าๆ คาดว่าคงเป็นเพราะต้องการที่จะให้ถนอมแบตฯล่ะมั้งครับ

Heat & Noise

ความร้อนที่ปล่อยออกมาจากเครื่องในการใช้งานทั่วๆไปก็แทบจะไม่รู้สึกครับ เสียงพัดลมก็เบามาก ลมที่ออกมาจาก vent ก็แค่อุ่นๆ

เสียงอ่านแผ่น DVD ดังกว่าพอสมควร ความร้อนแถวๆคีบอร์ดด้านซ้ายจะเริ่มเห็นชัดเจนก็ตอนใช้งานหนักๆ พวกเล่นเกมหรือ encoding Video ที่จะร้อนจนรู้สึกได้ เสียงพัดลมก็จะดังขึ้น (แต่ก็ยังเบาอยู่ดี) ลมที่ปล่อยออกมาก็ค่อนข้างร้อนมาก ถ้าเอามือไปอังนี่ก็สะดุ้งได้เหมือนกัน ส่วนจะวางบนตักก็คงพอไหวตอนที่จะทำงานทั่วไป

ส่วนการระบายความร้อนก็ต้องบอกได้คำเดียวว่า ดีเยี่ยม สามารถระบายความร้อนจาก 75°c มาอยู่ที่ 50°c ภายในเวลาราวๆ 2 นาทีเท่านั้น! เรียกได้ว่า Platform Centrino 2 ของ Intel ไม่ทำให้ผิดหวังเลยครับ

Conclusion

ด้วยราคาระดับนี้ หลายคนอาจจะคิดว่าแพง แต่ด้วยตรายี่ห้อของ Sony ใน Design ที่ใครๆก็ต้องเหลียวมอง บวกกับ Feature เจ๋งๆอย่าง Mode

ผมว่าก็เป็น notebook ที่คุ้มค่ากับราคาค่าตัว 49,900 บาท มากๆครับ
